Mr Vokuhl, what did you do to your coach?

Vokuhl: In a new Volvo 9700, P.E.R. replaced all safety-relevant signs and markings with its proprietary products. In addition, handrails, seat pedestals, roof openings and luggage rests, including the seat number markings, were equipped with photoluminescent strips. The strips were also included in the stair treads.

Thanks to their high luminance, the new markings glow for a very long time and therefore are still visible after long journeys at night. The weak onboard lighting is enough to charge them. The materials used are of a similar quality to those developed by P.E.R. for the aviation industry together with Lufthansa Technik.

Why are you using safety systems on a coach that are similar to those used on aeroplanes?

Vokuhl: That's because there are similar dangers on a coach: Passengers must be able to exit quickly despite a power cut, darkness and impaired visibility caused by smoke.

How have you benefitted from this installation?

Vokuhl: It gives us added safety for emergencies. We also gain added safety during regular coach operation. The photoluminescent strips mean that open areas, handrails and steps are much more visible.

Would you recommend these measures to colleagues?

Vokuhl: Yes, because I expect that similar measures will become a statutory requirement in any case at some point and because the equipment pays off.

How?

Vokuhl: I utilise the added safety as an active marketing tool by communicating the measures via all channels. This is received well by our passengers, who are made to feel safe and protected.

Was the installation expensive?

Vokuhl: From my point of view, the investment is reasonable and profitable.

Why are there still so few photoluminescent markings on coaches?

Vokuhl: Many coach operators simply don't know that they exist.
