Mr Mieding, how important are escape plans for hotels?
Mieding: It is an extremely important topic, because we rely on escape plans being effective if the worst case scenario becomes a reality. They form part of a hotel's safety concept and safety can not be taken seriously enough.
Is this mindset widespread in the hotel industry?
Mieding: Generally speaking, yes, but escape plans can often be overlooked in the day-to-day running of a hotel.
What kind of effect does that have?
Mieding: One example is simply forgetting to update the plans. Hotels are frequently renovated or expanded, and this kind of modification must be incorporated into the plans. If business is becoming more international, for instance, additional languages are needed on the plans. And let's not forget that a modern escape plan is much more effective than one that is 20 years old. For instance: The icons are easier to recognise and comply with current standards, and the planned routes are clearer.
The Fall Group's Hamburg hotels, Mercure Airport Hotel Hamburg and Leonardo Airport Hotel Hamburg, both relay on escape plans from P.E.R. Why?
Mieding: P.E.R. creates attractive, modern plans even from poor blueprints. In addition, I find P.E.R. products very clear and visually appealing, which is, after all, quite important for a hotel room. Moreover, we have had nothing but positive experiences with P.E.R. so far.

If we have changes to make they are implemented quickly, and if I need a replacement plan I have it within two days. Communication in general is just very effective.
Why did you revise the guidance systems in your hotels?
Mieding: At Mercure Airport Hotel Hamburg, the signage was no longer contemporary. In addition, we wanted to include a third language - French. At Leonardo Airport Hotel Hamburg, there was no guidance system prior to acquisition by the Fattal Group. We quickly changed that.
Have the guests noticed the difference?
Mieding: Without a doubt, and not just when the worst case scenario becomes a reality. At Mercure Airport Hotel Hamburg, we are actively involved in airline crew business - we would not have this business if the hotel was not completely up to date in terms of safety. What's more, every now and then a guest even suggests adjustments for the plans. We join forces with P.E.R. to implement the necessary immediately.
